Influences Include:

Ray Charles, George Jones, T Bone Walker, Lonnie Johnson, Joe Maphis, Odie Payne, Bessie Smith, James Jamerson, Merle Haggard, Magic Sam, Loretta Lynn, Carol Kaye, Gram Parsons, Howlin Wolf, The Band, David "Fathead" Newman, Hal Blaine, James Burton, Hubert Sumlin and many more.  (No Rock, please).

Mikie Lee Prasad is a Denver born, Bay Area based musician who knows his way around a song and is armed with a charismatic voice, solid guitar chops, and the easy, yet steady chime of the tambourine he wears around his ankle. His recordings also display a talent for playing the piano, bass and mandolin.

With four self released, critically acclaimed solo CD’s under his belt, Mikie also leads the bands Heavy Petting Zoo (blues, rock, funk), The Shark Alley Hobos (sea shanty/sing alongs), Double Distilled (guitar-piano duo), The Trio of Doom (Americana) and In The Flesh (Pink Floyd tribute band). He has also been a contributor (touring, playing on/producing cd's) to the bands of Maria Muldaur, Steve Gannon and Tippy Canoe and the Paddlemen.

Influences include... Tom Waits, The Meters, Alex Mcmurray, Little Feat, Beatles, Stones, Steve Earle, Happy Talk Band, Graham Parsons, The Band, SRV... I'm forgetting a bunch but you get the idea.  http://www.mikieleeprasad.com

Dan Stanton was born and raised in Florida, picking up the bass 25 years ago after being inspired by the music of Jaco Pastorius and Cannonball Adderley. He relocated to Los Angeles at 18 and studied Double Bass with Bob Magnusson (Sarah Vaughan) and Electric Bass with Steve Bailey and Gary Willis at Musicians Institute. After graduating he relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1990’s. In

addition to his own band Dan has performed with many local bands including Hebro, Heavy Petting Zoo, The Steve Gannon Band, Muchas Bluegracias, and with musicians such as Mikie Lee Prasad, Tim Barnes and Alex Skolnick. http://www.stantonemusic.com

"The Starry Plough has welcomed Tuesday open mic crowds for 13 years as of 2011. One of the most characteristically 'bay area' of all the open mics, in 1996 The Plough earned the prestigious title, 'the best open mic in the bay area' and has been keeping the fires lit ever since.

There is a feature at 10.30pm who plays for 20 mins - the feature is often the performer with the best crowd response from the previous week. There is trivia to win a free beer (free beer!) between acts for correct or humorous answers.

Very popular and welcoming, this playful open mic is not for the faint of heart or short of patience. In the 90's I used to head down to the Plough every Tuesday. It remains one of the most eclectic and enthusiastic open mic experiences in the bay area.

2007 was the 35th anniversary of The Plough and the 7th of which Joan Pez has been at the helm of the open mic night. The pub has just finishing renovations and the Irish republican decorations are back up on the walls!"  BayAreaOpenMics.com

This month please welcome the slippery ladies of the Bay's most exciting slippery event. GO DEEP! Lube Wrestlers in all shapes and sizes will show you their physical prowess with powerful poses! Models include the Lusty Ladies' Kitty Meow McMuffin and regular celebrities from The Thrillpeddlers, Tattoo Shops and more!

•what is dr. sketchy's anti-art school?

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art school is the world's premier alt.drawing movement. Artists draw glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality. Found in 2005 in a dive bar in Brooklyn, Dr. Sketchy's has now spread to over 100 cities around the world.

•who started dr. sketchy's?

Dr. Sketchy's was founded in 2005 by artists Molly Crabapple and A.V. Phibes. It's been run solely by Molly Crabapple (and her cadre of awesome helpers) since early '06. You can see more of Molly's art at www.mollycrabapple.com

•where did you come up with the dr. sketchy's anti-art school name? what are art monkeys?

Dr. Sketchy's is a corrupt Viennese doctor of our invention. Anti-Art School we chose because we were bad art students. "Art Monkey" was nicked from a late night we spent building steel weasels with New York's legendary Madagascar institute.

•who goes to dr. sketchy's?

Lots of people. Fancy pants gallery artists, art students, dog walkers, jewelry designers, tattoo artists, illustrators and cubicle slaves. We have about 40% non-professional artists. Slightly more girls attend than boys.

•do I have to be an artist to attend dr. sketchy's?

No. Lots of people who have never drawn before attend Dr. Sketchy's. We're a fun, non-judgmental environment to try your hand at drawing.

•do serious artists go to dr. sketchy's?

Yes, including world famous ones like Ron English, Alasdair Grey and Audrey Kawasaki. While we are accepting of non-artists, there's no reason you can't go to Dr. Sketchy's to seriously get your draw on.

About the Possum Family Singers

With Celu as “Fluffy” , Steve and Laurie started out in summer of 2009 as the Silver Kittens (because we were old and cute) out of “Celu and Friends” playing weekly at Chester’s Bayview Cafe, adding Matt and Ann along the way.  Each of us had Kitten names–Scruffy, Possum, Fritz and Muffy (and Gail–Dash!)

Steve, Laurie and Matt had been playing with the Cavepainters at the Starry Plough, Berkeley on Thursdays for about four years, when Steve was invited to take on the Saturday happy hour.   In November of 2009 Celu split off with the “Friends,” and also began booking Chester’s four nights per week, of which we took one Thursday each month.  Meanwhile, we needed another animal to name ourselves after, and the Possum Family was born.

The band is:

Ann Wright – Cello, Banjo, Guitar, and Vocals

Laurie Miller – Martin Bass, PJB, ZT Acoustic, and Vocals

Steve Soliah – Guitar and Vocals

Matt Parker – Mandolin, Guitar, Audio Devices, and Vocals

THE BRAZILIAN EXOTIC PROJECT featuring

SARAVA ZAMBA and TAMBORES JULIO REMELEXO

Doors at 2pm // Show from 3-7pm // $5 // All-Ages // wheelchair accessible // Kitchen Open!

This is a series of cultural music events with the goal of keeping Brazilian culture alive for the Brazilian community as well as for others who love and support Brazilian culture.

Featured are bands Sarava Zamba www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Sarava-Zamba/197233317078 and Tambores Julio Remelexo www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-YB5tDra4E, which have been playing in Bay Area for a number of years.

SaravaZamba was initiated in 2009, in Berkeley, CA, after a jam session of American and Brazilian artists with common musical interests. The name SaravaZamba comes from the combination of sarava which is an animated African greeting/farewell as well as an invocation from the Brazilian-African religion Candomblé, and zamba which is our original take on Brazilian samba with an international twist.  We have gone on to create original songs with strong influences from Brazilian, Jamaican, African and North American music. The band’s enthusiastic vibe is contagious and the crowd cannot help but dance and have fun.  Covers and original songs are in different languages – Portuguese, English and Spanish – adding to the multicultural experience.  The crowd can count on a mix of rhythms including samba, funk, forro, Afrobeat, Salsa, Reggae and Soul, creating a tropical groove, spicy and danceable with lots of sarava.

Tambores Julio Remelexo is a Brazilian percussion band lead by Julio Remelexo. He is a drummer originally from the Afro-Bloco Ilê Aiyê in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil and has played with famous musicians all over the world. Tambores Julio Remelexo, formerly known as Banda Remelexo, originally started in 2004 as an all women’s percussion bloco here in the U.S. similar to those of Salvador, Brazil. Tambores Julio Remelexo is a lively, energetic group known for its pop-axé and Afro-Reggae rhythms, dancing while playing, and unique tricks with instruments. For a great time, amazing energy, and fabulous entertainment…look to Tambores Julio Remelexo!!!!

“Laurie Miller sings a country ballad better ‘n anybody.  Her voice is right up there with Hank Williams” – Jean Hooker

Lenny Gill has been teaching guitar, bass, and drum lessons in the east bay since 1980.  Twice a year, he forms student rock bands (think Jack Black  in School of Rock, only more sane), and prepares each of them to perform a 20 minute set.

You’ll get to see students ranging from pre-teens to 50-somethings rocking out onstage, some for the first time in their lives!   Occasionally, Lenny will add a surprise or two to increase the entertainment value.  For example, when a group of 12-year-olds with a boy on drums and girls playing guitars and bass ripped into Purple Haze, Lenny couldn’t resist adding a fog machine to get the proper atmosphere.  Rock and roll was never cuter!

The music project SaravaZamba was initiated in 2009, in Berkeley, CA, after a jam session of American and Brazilian artists with common musical interests.

Brazilian Percussion band lead by Julio Remelexo. He is a drummer originally from the Afro-Bloco lle Aiye in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil and has played with famous musicians all over the world.  Tambores Julio Remelexo, formerly known as Banda Remelexo, originally started in 2004 as an all women's percussion bloco here in the U.S. similar to those of Salvador, Brasil. Tambores Julio Remelexo is a lively, energetic group known for its rhythms, dancing while playing, and unique tricks with instruments.  They perform all over the Bay Area and Northern California. They participate in Canaval San Francisco every year. In 2008 they were proud to have approximately 150 kids, teens, and adults join them to parade down Mission Street for Carnaval SF. Tambores Julio Remelexo also headlines the Yemanja Festival in Santa Cruz every year and in 2005 participated in the Yemanja Festival in Bahia, Brazil. For a great time, amazing energy, fabulous entertainment, and lots of fun…look to Tambores Julio Remelexo!!!!

About the book and its author:

Scott Miller has released more than a dozen albums with his bands Game Theory and the Loud Family, and his music has been described as "a cross between Alex Chilton, James Joyce, and the Electric Prunes" (Stereo Review) and "smart, funny, and instantly memorable" (Rolling Stone). In Music: What Happened?, Miller writes about each of the past 53 years in popular music—1957-2009—via countdown song lists, blending the perspectives of a serious musician, a thoughtful critic, and an all-devouring music fan. Miller not only tells you why he loves particular songs, but also what was going on in the musical world in which they competed to be heard.

The book is based on the series created for this web site, but Scott re-examined and rewrote much of the text; in addition, it's all been edited and fact-checked (though we still anticipate the odd error might sneak through, and if you find one, you're welcome to send in a correction—we'll fix it in the next printing). The book also contains three bonus chapters (2007, 2008 and 2009) that don't appear online, as well as a foreword and an interview with Scott by his longtime friend and fan Bob Lloyd.

"Miller... puts a lifetime of musical smarts into this book... [H]e'll make you want to hear 'Hey, Jude' right now--and make you feel like you're hearing it for the first time." --Rolling Stone Magazine: Four stars!

"This is a new and lively style of music writing that you just keep wanting to read more of." --Aimee Mann

"Scott Miller manages actual humor and major insights that may change the way you think about, for example, 1967. Almost a new art form." --Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields)

"Skim it to see what he says about your fave raves, or delve deeper to discover the unknown sonic pleasures that await you. A must for the dedicated music fiend." --Kim Cooper, author of "Neutral Milk Hotel's 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea'" (33 1/3 Series)

Ann Wright – Cello, Banjo, Guitar, and Vocals

Laurie Miller – Martin Bass, PJB, ZT Acoustic, and Vocals

Steve Soliah – Guitar and Vocals

Matt Parker – Mandolin, Guitar, Audio Devices, and Vocals
