Paufve Dance

Cover 8

(OAKLAND, CA) – Paufve Dance presents the sixth edition of its 8x8x8 series at the Starry Plough Pub on Thursday, February 4th, 2010. 8x8x8 features eight choreographers in an (approximately) 8’ x 8’ space showing experimental, new, and repertory dance works at the Starry Plough Pub in Berkeley.
The first annual 8x8x8 took place in 2003 at the Stork Club in Oakland. By using a non-traditional performance venue, an unusually small space, and presenting work in close proximity to the audience, 8x8x8 seeks to bring contemporary dance to new audiences while experimenting with alternative presentation formats.
The evening will include a diverse array of dance forms framed in contemporary expression. Influences and forms that will reveal themselves over the course of the evening include Joti Singh’s blend of Bhangra, Bollywood, and West African dance; Kimiko Guthrie’s exquisite balance of movement and text; Mutt 49’s unusual and outlandish mix of music, dance and unruliness; Navarrete x Kajiyama’s experiments mixing modern dance theater with Japanese Taiko drumming, Tango, Danzón and more; Nina Haft & Company’s integration of movement, meaning and memory into an act of live cinema; project agora’s improvisational dialogue between contemporary sound and athletic, lush dancing; and Vitali Kononov’s mix of contemporary dance, physical theater, contact and improvisation
8x8x8 takes place Thursday, February 4th at 8:00pm. Audiences are welcome to come early or at show time and enjoy the Starry Plough’s bar fare and beers. Admission is $8 cash for those age 21 and over at the door. ID is required.
Calendar Listing and Artist Biographies follow on pages 2 & 3.

ABOUT PAUFVE DANCE:
Paufve | dance is a contemporary dance company based in Oakland, California. Established in 2000 by choreographer Randee Paufve, the company was founded as a vehicle to support the continued creation of innovative work and to further explore avenues for movement research, live performance and community outreach. Paufve’s work is based in the belief that dance is a language which can capture, describe, and illuminate every aspect of the human condition. Her research and choreography examines artifice, authenticity and objectivity in our bodies. Paufve’s vision and work reflect a feminist values, the desire for integration and the necessity of contemporary community building. For each project, she gathers a diverse core of dancers to explore the complex terrain of human relationships.
The company has been presented by many venues locally and nationally including The Mondavi Performing Arts Center, the West Wave Dance Festival, Max10 in Los Angeles; PICA (Portland Institute for Contemporary Art), On The Boards/Seattle, Joyce SoHo in NYC, the Dance Complex in Boston, and the Phantom Theater in Warren, VT. The company was nominated for an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for their July 2009 performance of That Obscure Subject of Desire in San Francisco and was recently featured on NPR’s All Things Considered.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Joti Singh teaches, choreographs and performs Bhangra, Bollywood, and West African dance styles in the Bay Area as well as nationally and internationally. She founded performing group Duniya Dance and Drum Company in 2007. Joti has participated in the Alliance for California Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program and received their Traditional Arts Development grant. In the summer of 2008, Joti was an Artist-in-Residence at CounterPULSE and created the piece Dhoom Dhamaka about an innocent man imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. With mentor Zenon Barron, Joti received the Margaret Jenkins CHIME grant and will collaborate with Zenon’s company, Ensambles Ballet Folklorico de San Francisco to create a piece on the Punjabi-Mexican communities of California, for which they have received a Creative Work Fund grant, and will present in late 2010. Joti holds an M.A. in South Asian Studies from UC Berkeley.
Kimiko Guthrie is the co-founder and co-artistic director of Dandelion Dancetheater. Her work has been presented throughout the greater Bay Area, as well as nationally and internationally. She has been a resident choreographer

for Asian American Dance Performances, a member of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and has performed with many other Bay Area-based choreographers and companies. Her writing has been published in an anthology of short stories, Intersecting Circles, by the Bamboo Ridge Press. Kimiko holds an MFA in Choreography from Mills College and is a lecturer at Cal State East Bay. This year she is honored to be Artist-in-Residence at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center.
Rebecca Johnson began training and performing modern dance since 1985. She earned BA degrees in English Literature and Modern Dance from Rutgers University. Rebecca performed throughout New England, New York and New Jersey before relocating to the Bay Area in 1999 and since then has toured with Paufve Dance and Nina Haft & Company to Portland, San Diego, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. Rebecca’s work has been presented by the Dance IS Festival, Works in the Works, Watchword Press and Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, where she is currently the Administrative Director.
Mutt 49 is a quixotic quintet from beyond the beyond! Musical stylings you'll not hear anywhere else in this realm, by a divalicious, deitific, deranged and dainty bunch... Expect us in unexpected cultural crevasses throughout California in 2010 - 11, as we launch our first CD and public performance tour! All music, dance and unruliness created and performed by the band: Sterling Fresnell, Jedediah Strong, TipToe, The Conglomerate, and Bubbles Eek Balsteinovich, with back-up singer/dancers Black Acacia and Wisteria Rising. Mutt 49 has collaborated with Miyomi Najimoto, Dandelion Dancetheater, Melodica and more. Mutt 49 presents Into Glass at 8x8x8.
Navarrete x Kajiyama has a passion for immersing themselves in communities and sub-cultures, exploring people's histories, and expressing experiences through performance that is accessible, but that challenges the viewer to reflect on our times. Their modern dance theater vocabulary has been enriched by studies of Japanese Taiko drumming, Latin American social dances (such as Tango and Danzón), and the cultural significance of these community-building art forms. In 2006, Navarrete x Kajiyama was named one of the 25 to Watch by Dance Magazine. In 2007, they collaborated with visual artists from EastSide Arts Alliance, an organization of artists and community organizers of color in East Oakland to create the performance environment for The Revenge of Huitlacoche. That same year, Navarrete x Kajiyama was invited to present their work at the Hemispheric Institute on Performance and Politics' Encuentro in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2008, they were chosen to be the San Francisco representative for SCUBA Touring Network performances in Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Seattle.
Nina Haft & Company (NH&Co.) is a contemporary dance ensemble that integrates movement, meaning and memory into acts of live cinema. Artistic Director Nina Haft was an inaugural member of CHIME (Margaret Jenkins Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange); her work has also been supported by grants and residencies from the Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, the City of Oakland, the California Arts Council, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the Clorox Foundation, CA$H, and many generous individuals. She has been profiled in Dance Magazine and toured nationally with her work in new Jewish performance. This spring, NH&Co. launches our first international tour to the Middle East, followed by our 10th Anniversary home season in fall 2010. Catch us next week at CSU East Bay's Queer Dance Festival on February 11th. NH&Co
The primary mission of project agora is to promote creative dialogue between artists through interdisciplinary collaborations. Co-founded in May 2006 by San Francisco dancers/ choreographers Bliss Kohlmyer Dowman & Kara Davis, this curatorial organization draws its mission from its Greek name: "Agora" (a public forum; a place designated specifically for open debate and the exchange of ideas). Drawing on a history of shared creation, performance, training and teaching, these two Bay Area artists join forces to promote their creative voices within the new generation of San Francisco choreographers. By presenting evenings that involve artists who challenge yet share similar influences and aesthetic values, project agora strives to illuminate how all forms of artistic expression both inform and are relevant to each other.
Vitali Kononov is a movement artist, bodyworker and somatic movement educator, working with improvisation as a performance discipline, therapeutic tool and a contemplative practice. He was born in St-Petersburg, Russia, in 1966. He has been teaching contact improvisation since 1997 in Russia, Europe, USA and Mexico. He studied contemporary dance, physical theater, contact and ensemble improvisation, Somatic Movement Therapy. He taught at Moving On Center – School for Participatory Arts and Somatic Research since 2002. He was a faculty member of ADF (2003-04). He has a private bodywork and ArtSomatic movement therapy practice in Berkeley, California.

Mortified "Angst Written"

Followed by DJ Oly

Cover: 10adv, 12 door

Hailed a "cultural phenomenon" by Newsweek and celebrated for years by the likes of This American Life, The Today Show, Esquire, The Onion AV Club, Daily Candy, Entertainment Weekly, and E!, Mortified is a comic excavation of the strange and extraordinary things we created as kids. Witness adults sharing their own adolescent journals, letters, poems, lyrics, home movies, stories and more.

After all, where else can you hear grown men and women confront their past with firsthand tales of their... first kiss, first puff, worst prom, fights with mom, life at bible camp, worst hand job, best mall job, and reasons they deserved to marry Jon Bon Jovi.

The largest and longest-running project of its kind, Mortified produces comedic content for the stage, the page, and the web. Its latest book, Mortified: Love Is a Battlefield, is in stores everywhere.

The project began in the late 1990s when founder Dave Nadelberg unearthed a notably awkward love letter and began sharing with friends. Formalizing as Mortified in 2002 with co-producer Neil Katcher, the project has since sifted through thousands of volumes of otherwise forgotten notebooks, photos, and envelopes in an effort crack the lid off our cultural shoebox and expose our inner geek. Participants include a wide range of people, from professional performers (comics, celebrities, singers) to total amateurs (architects, ad execs, salesmen) all in the noble pursuit of self-degradation. Personal redemption through public humiliation. There are a million stories buried in the pages of people's lives. Mortified's mission is to simply help people find them.

Share the shame.

---
THE MORTIFIED METHOD: OUR GUIDELINES

Eveyone needs words to live by. Moses had ten commandments. Dogma 95 had ten vows of chastity. Fight Club had eight rules. The Babysitters Club had, well, something. Here's our approach...

  • Mortified collects artifacts of adolescent expression (writing, art, media) through open calls for participants
  • Mortified collaborates with authors to organize presentations around unique personal themes and narratives that emerge from the material
  • Material must be presented by its original author
  • Material must be authentic; language is only altered to protect the innocent, awkward or angsty

Pomegranate:
Pomegranate formed in the mid-1990s and has released 3 albums. Pomegranate's debut album, Don Ron, released by Treat & Release Records, was well received by college radio and immediately went into the top-ten college radio adds (CMJ). Pomegranate's second album, Larry Lane, was co-released on M-Theory Records/Drainpipe Records. Produced by Pomegranate and Bernd Burgdorf, the album received college radio airplay nationwide. Pomegranate recorded their third album, Outside of This, on their own with a definite low-fi approach. The album is stark and raw with 12 songs that touch on what makes Pomegranate's sound unique: intimate and moody with alluring shades of darkness broken up by slivers of bright sunny pop. Pomegranate's current lineup consists of Adam Twain, Gavin Canaan, and Michael Creason.

Patrick Winningham Band
You older kids will remember the famous brat pack movie "St. Elmo's Fire" and that crazy band "New Breed" on stage in the infamous halloween scene. Fast forward 23 years later and that band is the Patrick Winningham band. Same guys, only several of the band mates left poor Patrick bandless and took off and joined Counting Crows. Dan Vickrey and Charley Gillingham were stolen by Counting Crows, but as with all bands, they take breaks and have downtime. Luckily for the fans, PWB gets together occasionally to strut their stuff.

J. Russo
Crooning his way through catchy melodies and introspective lyrics, J.Russo blends a unique style of alternative, lounge, jazz, and latin. His musical influences diversify across several genres as well: Paolo Conte, Frank Sinatra, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Wynton Marsalis.

!ONIBLA Benefit Show for Fallen ALBINO! Guitarist: Starry Plough Fri, Dec 18

Berkeley, CA – Sep. 24, 2009 – The members of ALBINO!
(www.albinoband.com), San Francisco’s typically costumed and face-painted Afrobeat ensemble, will play an intimate show as their more casually dressed alter ego, !ONIBLA, at the Starry Plough on Friday, December 18.

The show is a fundraiser to help veteran ALBINO! guitarist Cal Reichenbach meet the cost of recent shoulder surgery. While performing with ALBINO! in Boise upon a raised outdoor stage, Reichenbach stepped too far to the side on one of the band’s trademark dance steps, fell over the edge, and injured his left shoulder. Last August, the guitarist had surgery to repair the resulting tear to his labrum. Cal is still recovering, but will be back on the bandstand that night with some hefty bills to pay--and a birthday to celebrate.

Admission for the event is a $12 and up sliding scale. 100% of all contributions over $12 will go to the cause. Reichenbach’s instrumental groove trio SOCKET (www.socketband.com) will open the show.

ABOUT ALBINO!:

ALBINO! is a San Francisco Bay Area-based 10-piece Afrobeat ensemble that honors the fiery legacy of Afrobeat inventor Fela Kuti by melding tightly crafted arrangements and jazz-tinged harmony with propulsive, high energy grooves. Formed in 2003, ALBINO! has performed to capacity crowds up and down the West Coast and as far east as Montreal. Whenever this funk-fueled juggernaut performs, ALBINO! re-acquaints listeners with what it feels like to truly groove, and infuses audiences with an ecstatic energy that pours forth from the stage. The band's wild costumes and painted faces suggest a blend of Sun Ra's interstellar Arkestra or Parliament, part of the reason ALBINO! has become a favorite of the Burning Man community. Witnessing all ten members of this garish behemoth locking into choreographed step is as much of a feast for the eyes as the band's deliciously layered funk is for the ears.

SCOTT AMENDOLA vs. WIL BLADES
This duo was born when Scott had the vision of performing Duke Ellington’s “Far East Suite” with Wil. While it seemed a daunting task to translate a suite (originally written for a big band) into duo, the Hammond Organ had previously been used in the 1940’s and 1950’s to emulate the sound of big bands. With Wil’s knowledge of this tradition and Scott’s desire to push boundaries, they were able to pull it off in an explorative, yet cohesive manner. The duo continues to perform Ellington but also covers everything from Avant Garde to Funk, Bebop to Rock. Tonight with guest Erik Deutsch.

The Zony Mash w/Horns Featuring Skerik

The Zony Mash w/Horns

Featuring,  Wayne Horvitz-toetsen, Timothy Young-gitaar, Keith Lowe-bass, Andy Roth-drums, Ron Miles-trompet, Steve Moore-trombone, Briggan Krauss-sax, Skerik-sax

Cover: $10

Zony Mash made its debut in late 1995 as the unofficial house band at the OK Hotel in Seattle, where the guys honed their chops with months of weekly gigs. In Zony Mash you..ll hear a wide variety of influences, including sixties-style psychedelic rock, the blues and definitely some sounds that could only be described as being from outer space. All of this was amalgamated into something completely original. Although named after a tune by The Meters, Zony Mash was nevertheless not a Meters tribute band. Although Zony Mash drew heavy inspiration from the past, they never succumbed to derivative nostalgia. Imagine instead a uniquely modern, unpredictable take on a Fillmore-era groove and a bandleader bent on pushing his music in new directions. In the end though, it..s Wayne..s unique harmonic sense and songwriting that set Zony Mash apart. Zony Mash played to audiences worldwide, at some of the most prestigious jazz festivals around. They played at Montreux, Vancouver, Pori and North Sea Festivals and at Warsaw Summer Jazz Days. Mostly though they played the clubs in Seattle and the West Coast, blowing away a twenty-something crowd. Not surprisingly, both college-oriented publications such as CMJ and more mainstream magazines such as Downbeat give their CD releases critical acclaim. The band..s eclecticism even showed in its choice of special projects, including a series of shows where they added a horn section to the mix. Ex-Santana drummer Michael Shreve and guitarist Bill Frisell sometimes sat in as well.
Zony Mash began its' life with Wayne Horvitz on Hammond B-3 and keyboards, Timothy Young on guitar, Fred Chalenor on bass and Andy Roth on drums. Keith Lowe replaced Fred as the bassist in late 1998. Zony Mash toured numerous times on the West Coast, did three US tours and also played in Europe and Iceland. Five Zony Mash CDs are available: Cold Spell (1997), Brand Spankin' New (1998) and Upper Egypt (2000) are all on Knitting Factory Records. The first live CD, Live In Seattle, was released in 2002. The final two shows were recorded for Kufala Records and released as Farewell Shows (2004).
What the critics said about Zony Mash:
" ...modern electric jazz-funk at its finest." Christopher Porter, Jazz Times
"...a smarter, more harmonically involved band that never stays locked in a single groove. It's Meters meets Miles approach, though certainly tailored for the crossover, jam band set, was of the type that would be equally attractive to more discriminating listeners." Bill Kohlhaase, LA Times
