A bumpin night of Soul and Samba with

The California Honeydrops,

The Lloyd Family Players

Stymie and the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra

Cover 10$

The California Honeydrops are the Bay Area’s newest and most authentic Roots and Blues ensemble. Influenced by artists such as Robert Johnson, Professor Longhair, and the Soul Stirrers, this group of young musicians breathes new life and inspiration into the nearly forgotten music of the American South. Combining the styles of ragtime, blues, gospel and soul all in an acoustic jug band format--one thing is certain: there is no other band like the California Honeydrops.

Born in Chico, raised up at Burning Man, and brought to urban fruition in Oakland, California, the Loyd Family Players take the pulse of traditional Brazilian samba and twist it into a loud, sweaty, sexy muss that's all their very own. The ten-to-twenty-person coed percussion troupe swipes elements from hip-hop, dancehall, punk rock, drum n'bass, summer camp...anything goes. With members hailing from such exotic locales as England, Brazil, Rome, Peru, Antarctica, and Long Island, the Loyds are a foxy, unstoppable (and unstoppably foxy) dance machine. In the last several years the Loyds have earned a reputation as a commanding and jubilant festival band for their massive, moving performances. These shows sweep people into the parade, whether the band is passing through fairgrounds or taking the floor during a set change, making for an inclusive musical experience that keeps the band with the people and the people inside the music.

Stymie & the PJLO's instrumentation and presentation recalls classic funk groups like Funkadelic and Sly and The Family Stone, yet the music is 100% original, blending all the musical influences, modern cultural craziness, and cartoon humor that affect our lives.

By eschewing cover songs to concentrate on crafting soulful, socially conscious originals, Stymie and his behemoth band have injected new life into the flailing San Francisco music scene and are proud to announce the release of The Secret Hits of the Black & Blue Parade.

Besides opening for funk legends Earth, Wind, and Fire at Californias Shoreline Amphitheater and Concord Pavilion, Stymie & the PJLO have paid dues at such venerable San Francisco clubs as Slims, Bimbos, the Elbo Room, the Bottom of the Hill, Tongue and Groove, and the Paradise Lounge.

The groups sound incorporates elements of rock, jazz, hip-hop, pop, reggae, Latin, and gospel, while maintaining a soulful funkiness and nastiness that throws audiences into a frenzy.

At one show, P-Funk All-stars guitarist John Payne was inspired to leap on stage and jam with the band on "Fan Club," a bouncy mixture of James Brown grooves, whimsical horn vamps, and hot swing breaks. The song was described by All Music Guides John Bush as "the most entertaining" on that album.

Billy Preston was impressed, too. When Stymie & the PJLO was hired to play a musical tribute to the funk icon, Preston was moved to join them on stage, later saying, "I dig you guys. You remind me of early Sly & the Family Stone."

An Evening with Accoustic Guitar Player of the Year!
Monte Montgomery

An Evening with Accoustic Guitar Player of the Year!

Monte Montgomery

Cover: 10

Monte Montgomery has taken the acoustic guitar beyond anyone's expectations. With his amazing fretwork, unique combination finger and pick style playing through trailblazing "chordal" thoroughfares often baffling even the most accomplished players. While Monte remains a huge enigma in the guitar universe, his legendary reputation has spread like wildfire since he appeared on Austin City Limits. In 2004 Monte was named on Guitar Player Magazine's list of "Top 50 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time" and in 2005 he was featured the Covers of "Frets" and "Acoustic Guitar" magazines. Countless articles have been written about Monte describing him "The Evel Knivel of Guitar", "Six Strings Attached To Dynamite", "The Answer To The Fermi Paradox" and "The Acoustic Shred Master" just to name a few. Monte's fretwork has become the benchmark for acoustic guitar players. "An American Original", there is no doubt Monte Montgomery is destined to become An American Legend.

In spite of all the "six-string notoriety", and just in case you didn't "know-tice", Monte isn't just a "guitar hero", "shred master" or "guitar god" as he's most often described. No, actually Monte Montgomery is much more than just a world-class guitar virtuoso with more new tricks up his fret board than your average "guitar slinger". What sets Monte apart from all others is that he's one of the most accomplished songwriters of our time, a remarkable singer and an extraordinary music arranger. Many of Monte's fans attend his concerts simply to hear his compelling vocals as he delivers his finely penned songs powerfully and passionately. To some, his incredible guitar pyrotechnics are simply an addition of tasty icing topping off a delicious cake.

Monte's latest release "Monte Montgomery At WorkPlay" (Harmonic Records - 2005), available in CD and DVD versions is a double barrel treat offering fans a visual dimension of Monte's incredible power packed live performance recorded Live at WorkPlay Theater in Birmingham, Alabama.

Monte grew up immersed in music, playing professionally since his teens and is currently one of the hottest draws on the talent-packed Austin, TX music scene and throughout the U.S. where he is well known for his electrifying performances. Monte was the first ever to be named by Guitar One Magazine on their list of Top 10 Best Undiscovered Guitarists in America and is the only winner of the "Best Acoustic Guitar Player" for 7 Years in a Row at the Austin Music Awards.

As Acoustic Guitar Magazine notes, "Monte Montgomery is not your typical up-and-coming guitar god. His exquisitely crafted, melodically and rhythmically sophisticated pop songs suggest the best of Fleetwood Mac, Squeeze and The Police, while just happening to integrate the most mind-boggling guitar work in the state of Texas."

Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Monte first learned piano and trumpet, and was an avid listener to pop radio. After moving to Texas at the age of 12, he joined the legendary musical scene around the restored town of Luckenbach and began his impressive rise as a musical talent. Performing with his mother at a popular Hill Country picking parlor he quickly absorbed everything he could. By his mid-teens, Monte was playing gigs on his own around Austin and San Antonio, both with bands as an electric guitarist and in a variety of acoustic configurations. During this time Monte developed his guitar chops as he absorbed the work of respected players such as Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Lee, Steve Vai, Steve Morse and Larry Carlton. "I like it all," he explains of his musical influences.

Leading his own band, Monte began developing his trademark electrified acoustic guitar style. "I started playing acoustic at the beginning of each set, the response was so overwhelming that I kept the acoustic up there longer and longer.  Then I just started playing all acoustic. I found I could do anything on an acoustic guitar I could do on an electric if I turned it up loud enough."

After living and playing in San Antonio for a time, Monte set out to make his mark in the highly competitive Austin musical community. Starting with a $50 half-hour gig at a small Austin Pub on a Tuesday night, Monte quickly attracted packed houses and graduated to filling the biggest clubs in the city. His live performances and albums have earned him words of praise in the music press and an ever-widening touring circuit throughout the U.S. As Texas Monthly noted, "He brings taste, precision, economy and a playful sense of timing to popish songs with sturdy hooks and sings in a voice that's equal parts grit and sunshine. And when you have the ability to make one guitar sound like two, who needs any more support than bass and drums."

Monte caught the ear of Austin City Limits producer Terry Lickona, who invited the relatively unknown talent to tape a segment of the legendary show. When Lickona introduced Monte to the audience, he described Monte's talent in a simple yet profound statement: "Monte Montgomery blows people away. There is no other way to describe it."

When word about Monte's virtuosity reached the folks at Alvarez Guitars. They quickly took a keen interest and secured Monte's endorsement. In the meantime Monte's reputation as the Hottest Acoustic Guitarist on the planet was being cultivated as he toured nationwide. This led to the introduction of the MMY-1 Monte Montgomery Signature Guitar , which was unveiled at the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California in January 2004.

Monte's considerable musical talents have come to fruition. As leader of his own band, he continues as a national touring act and has shown a side that's more than a new found "Texas Guitar Slinger". His electrifying live shows deliver a dynamic rock n' roll experience with rich, stunning guitar work and powerful song deliveries. Monte sings and writes songs that are concise and contemporary and although his music contains a lot of guitar it's more than just a guitar show. With an appeal that extends to listeners of all ages and tastes, Monte has been making a living playing and singing for most of his life, building a career through his own hard work and talent. In fact, it's almost as if his future as a musician was all but fated. "I never woke up and said, what am I supposed to be doing with my life? I always knew, even before I played guitar, that I was going to be doing music, one way or another."

The Doors Legacy Band

Cover: 9

The music of The Doors has continued to remain relevant for over 40 years. Not suprising given the power and passion of the music they played. The Doors did more than just perform their music – their shows could create a dark, erotic hypnosis of the mind and senses. THE DOORS LEGACY BAND recreates this experience as accurately as possible with every performance. No limits. No restraints. THE DOORS LEGACY BAND is proud to celebrate the music of one of America's most influential rock bands. Just like the originals, THE DOORS LEGACY BAND doesn't just perform the music, but also contributes elements of theater and poetry to every show. Hailing from Bozeman, MT, they have been performing sold out shows for years and are quickly becoming one of the most sought after tribute acts in the country. THE DOORS LEGACY BAND presents the music of The Doors at its most raw, with all the fire and energy it deserves. Is everybody in? The ceremony is about to begin.

Kiss the Crystal Flake, the new studio album by California’s The Mother Hips, was released April 3 on New York based-indie Camera Records.  It is the follow up to the acclaimed Red Tandy EP (Camera Records, 2005) and the first full album for The Hips since 2001’s Green Hills of the Earth. Featuring 12 new songs Kiss The Crystal Flake reintroduces the world to The Mother Hips’ own brand of California rock, blending a natural psychedelia with their own 21st century musicianship and songwriting. It is produced by The Mother Hips with Badman Recording Co. founder Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Call and Response, Erlend Oye.)

"This album is almost like a debut album for us,” said singer/guitarist Tim Bluhm. “It is very different from anything we recorded in the past. You know that saying about wishing you knew then what you know now? Kiss The Crystal Flake is that coming true."

Formed in 1991 at Chico State in Northern California, The Mother Hips have run the gamut of experiences as a band - from dorm band to buzz band to cult favorite. They took an extended break which nearly became a permanent one after the 2001 album’s release, but decided to reconvene a few years ago, first playing shows, and now as a full-fledged band, writing, recording and releasing new music.

“Many things have come our way,” explained singer/guitarist Loiacono. “Opportunities, challenges, gifts, hard times, misfortune…. Kiss the Crystal Flake is about embracing everything. It's about standing face to face with whatever comes.”

Ultralash – Peppered with vintage organs, mechanical samplers and other old-timey instruments, Ultralash is uncompromising pop-tronica that skips effortlessly between enigmatic porch folk and ambient trip-hop collage. Headed up by songwriter/producer Karry Walker, the band features a stellar cast of artists in their own right – Myles Boisen (Clubfoot Orchestra, Splatter Trio), Sleepytime Gorilla Museum’s Michael Mellender, Kelly Atkins of 20 Minute Loop and San Francisco’s ubiquitous Ricky Carter on drums.

20 Minute Loop - SFWEEKLY:  Some bands are lovable because they sound so dumb: Take the Pipettes or Metallica, for instance.  Local jangle freak-pop band 20 Minute Loop is just the opposite, with a distinct sound that says, "These people are perfectly nice, but they are smarter than you and know it.  Fear them slightly.  They can do math."  It's the sound of many other musical aggregations, like early REM, or the Pixies or Sonic Youth.  Sudden tempo changes, a total lack of normal chord structure, and difficult vocal harmonies are typical 20 Minute Loop touches, but the overall effect is far from challenging.  In fact, it's charming and pretty - it's pop, after all.  Interestingly, the group's three full-length CDs hardly do justice to its live show, which is even better and smarter.

Whether playing solo or with his band, San Francisco North Bay singer-songwriter Jerry Hannan is one of the most revered songwriter/performers in the Bay Area. Recently, Hannan recorded his own creation, ‘Society’ with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, which will be featured in Sean Penn’s film “Into the Wild” due out in September 2007. “I Thought I Was You”, written by Jerry and brother Sean Hannan also plays in “Into the Wild.” In 2003, after touring internationally, Jerry recorded and released his second CD "Sounds Like a Story". A new song "DaDaDa" from the CD was featured in the film "The Pledge" (Jack Nicholson). He performed in Sam Shepard's play, "The Late Henry Moss," at San Francisco's Theatre on the Square (along with Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Cheech Marin and Woody Harrelson). He also appeared as a raucous singer who offsets a romantic conversation between Harry Connick Jr and Sarah Jessica Parker. in Sony Picture's "Life Without Dick".

Often described as "shades of Dylan, John Prine and Van Morrison...very Americana with a faint Irish lilt", Hannan's songs (like those of Springsteen, Steve Earle and Cat Stevens) speak of our everyday lives and the magic that we sometimes miss. He's a storyteller who loves to stir the crowd. He has been called a “three chord wizard,” with guitar, lyrics and harmonica, often funny, sardonic in a good-natured way, dealing with issues like ecology, friendship, love, and what he calls an backward society.

Raised on jigs and ballads in San Francisco's Irish community, Jerry Hannan grew up listening to the music of his Irish-born parents (The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers), as well as Cat Stevens. As a youngster he took accordion lessons, switching to guitar in high school and playing in rock 'n roll bands.

Hannan is currently recording an “un-plugged” solo record in San Francisco which will feature many new concoctions as well as a few re-interpretations of older tracks.

These ladies are an amazingly tight and sweet unit. Shani leads from the rear, riding and maintaining a tight, strong groove. Originally from Los Angeles, she has been playing music her entire life. Starting out on clarinet at age seven, shes played a variety of instruments before finding her calling on the drums. Most influenced by old school R&B, and the legendary artist Prince, Shani produces a powerful foundation, which allows London Street to build upon with ease.
When it comes to the bass, Jenn Curiel has a style all her own. Smooth and rhythmic, she never skips a beat. Growing up in Los Angeles, she studied the baritone horn for several years before deciding to switch to the bass guitar. Her musical roots stem from bass legend Verdeen White and his groundbreaking group Earth, Wind and Fire. Similar to Verdeen, Jenn designs unique and distinctive bass lines that compliment the melody.
Lesley Grant brings sweet and sultry vocals to this great ensemble. Growing up in Georgia, she was raised on the blues and gospel music. Singing in her church choir from age 7, her voice developed amongst a family and community of singers. She learned how the power of harmony, and the strength of melody can charm a listener. Her influences are imbedded in soul music, and range from the late, great Donny Hathaway to Ani DiFranco.
Forming in San Francisco six years ago, London Street has already enjoyed many successes. They have performed in such highly esteemed venues as the Fillmore Lounge in the Fillmore Auditorium, Great American Music Hall, Slims, The Elbo Room, Rasselas Jazz Club, and many others. In addition, they have captivated large crowds at great festivals like The Haight Street Fair and Bay To Breakers. They have toured internationally with renowned acts such as Kofy Brown, india.arie, Angie Stone, Eric Sardinas and Jethro Tull's Ian Andersen. Locally, they've played with great acts such as The Roots, Macy Gray, The Brand New Heavies, Ozomatli, Music Soulchild, Erykah Badu, ALO, John Legend, Beth Waters, King Street, and Los Mocosos.
The girls also keep busy by supplying the rhythm section to local acts like Four Year Bender, Guitarmaggedon, Sean Leahys Neckbone and Trevor Garrods solo project. Most recently they performed with Guitarmaggedon, including Sean Leahy and members of Tea Leaf Green and ALO, at The Independent.
London Street is building a reputation based on a solid, energetic, and heartfelt live performance. Their fierce and inspiring original songs draw their influences from seventies R&B and Funk, and are able to lift the spirits of any audience. The power of music has joined the creative zeal of these three ladies for an expressive look at life through lyric and melody.
Passion Power Poetry

The Plough Presents A sound that knows no borders with

The Brothers of The Baladi

and

Belly Dance Odyssey

10$

Brothers of the Baladi will bring their World Music mix to California in support of Just Do What's Right , a new CD that includes Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World" and Chris Rea's "Nothing To Fear," plus six originals and classic Arabic, Persian and Celtic favorites. Those original songs, sung in English, are rich with a positive political message - summed up by the title track "Just Do What's Right." It is a message of hope and change that fills every cut with a new fusion of ancient and contemporary grooves, led by vocalist/percussionist Michael Beach . Just Do What's Right brings together political passion, great songwriting and a very special and unique musical dimension never heard before: a mosaic of vivid lyrics and melodies, it is truly "A sound that knows no borders." (LA Times)

For the past thirty years, Brothers of the Baladi have reached out to cross the boundaries of culture and embrace music as true language of world peace and diplomacy. The Brothers of the Baladi were named after the Arabic word, baladi (bah-luh dee), which means country, country folk and people. The band has grown from a duo to a quintet, who tour the US, Canada and Europe and whose market has broadened to include a diverse fan base from the belly dancer to the World music radio aficionado to the college student discovering the wide range of global music for the first time. First known for their traditional Middle-Eastern music, the Brothers of the Baladi now tastefully mix traditional ethnic/acoustic instruments with Western instrumentation, vocals in seven languages and exotic rhythms.

Along with Michael Beach the band's lineup includes J. Michael Kearsey (vocals, bass & riq), Geoff George (vocals, quarter-tone keyboards), Mark Giles (vocals & drum set) and Daniel Eshoo (oud, saz & hurdy gurdy).

"The Brothers of the Baladi have been successful because they express their American selves through the music of another culture. You can hear it in the beat, in the phrasing: this is not alien....the longtime Portland group's role as messenger from another world has remained remarkably consistent." ( The Oregonian )

BLUES NIGHT

HOSTED BY

SHAWN GONZALES
For nearly 20 years, Shawn Gonzales has been
perfecting his art as a blues/world guitarist. Playing
with legends such as The Wailers and John Lee Hooker,
Shawn’s talent has carried him to stages all over the
world, and has influenced a catalog of hundreds of
original songs. Shawn has played in various venues and
Festivals in Europe, most notably, The Kløften
Festival and The Samso Festival. Shawn travels back to
Europe annually, and is now making his rounds in the
bay area.
BLUES NIGHT -FEATURING:

ARCHIE LEE HOOKER- When Archie Lee Hooker Jr. left
Memphis, TN in 1989, to care for his uncle ’The
Godfather of Blues: John Lee Hooker; he had no idea of
all the things he would learn, the turns that his life
would take, and that in five short years he would
begin to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. Archie Lee
begin his own singing career and then earned the right
to open up and tour with John Lee during the last
years of his life.

Living with John Lee and caring for him for over 11
years, Archie Lee learned where true blues originate,
in ones heart and soul. In his music, he does what any
good blues man does, sing about his life, the people
and the things that have inspired him so he can
inspire others. Through his music, Archie Lee wants to
give to others knowledge, courage, inspiration, joy
and especially love.

BIG VIC- Born Oct.13th 1960, Big Vic is a cousin of
blues legend Johnny Heartsman. Curently he plays
guitar for several bay area reggae bands and often
frequents blues jams during the week. Favorite guitar
plaers include Grew Howe, Jeff Beck and Prince.

AUGUSTA LEE COLLINS- An accomplished jazz drummer
during the 70’s , turned acoustic guitar playing
singer songwriter, Augusta Collins has developed his
own blues sound over the past 35 years. He has played
with Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sonny Rhodes, and The Oakland
Orchrestra.
