About the Possum Family Singers

With Celu as “Fluffy” , Steve and Laurie started out in summer of 2009 as the Silver Kittens (because we were old and cute) out of “Celu and Friends” playing weekly at Chester’s Bayview Cafe, adding Matt and Ann along the way.  Each of us had Kitten names–Scruffy, Possum, Fritz and Muffy (and Gail–Dash!)

Steve, Laurie and Matt had been playing with the Cavepainters at the Starry Plough, Berkeley on Thursdays for about four years, when Steve was invited to take on the Saturday happy hour.   In November of 2009 Celu split off with the “Friends,” and also began booking Chester’s four nights per week, of which we took one Thursday each month.  Meanwhile, we needed another animal to name ourselves after, and the Possum Family was born.

The band is:

Ann Wright – Cello, Banjo, Guitar, and Vocals

Laurie Miller – Martin Bass, PJB, ZT Acoustic, and Vocals

Steve Soliah – Guitar and Vocals

Matt Parker – Mandolin, Guitar, Audio Devices, and Vocals

“Laurie Miller sings a country ballad better ‘n anybody.  Her voice is right up there with Hank Williams” – Jean Hooker

"The Starry Plough has welcomed Tuesday open mic crowds for 13 years as of 2011. One of the most characteristically 'bay area' of all the open mics, in 1996 The Plough earned the prestigious title,'the best open mic in the bay area' and has been keeping the fires lit ever since.

There is a feature at 10.30pm who plays for 20 mins - the feature is often the performer with the best crowd response from the previous week. There is trivia to win a free beer (free beer!) between acts for correct or humorous answers.

Very popular and welcoming, this playful open mic is not for the faint of heart or short of patience. In the 90's I used to head down to the Plough every Tuesday. It remains one of the most eclectic and enthusiastic open mic experiences in the bay area.

2007 was the 35th anniversary of The Plough and the 7th of which Joan Pez has been at the helm of the open mic night. The pub has just finishing renovations and the Irish republican decorations are back up on the walls!"  BayAreaOpenMics.com

Don't miss out on The Starry Plough's legendary St. Pat's Party!

For the 40th year The Starry Plough, Berkeley's purest Irish revolutionary pub, celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with almost 12-hours of continuous fiery Irish music and dance.

For the 11th year Driving With Fergus will conduct a marathon show from 7pm until the pub closes in the wee hours.  The quartet will bring in guest musicians, singers from the crowd, the mighty Lee Martin on pipes (as loud as the amplified band!) and plenty of jigs, reels and songs played on Irish flutes and tinwhistles, fiddle, tenor banjo, Irish bouzouki, and Irish drum.

Around 6pm the magnificently attired McBride Irish Dancers will be on hand with their impressive footwork and mastery of the form. Dancing in the afternoon and at various times throughout the night will be led by John Slaymaker & the Monday Night Céilí Dancers, who encourage you to join in!

Bring a hearty appetite and a healthy thirst; the revamped kitchen will be serving tender $12 Corned Beef and Cabbage dinners. No green beer, no phony accents, just the best Irish trad musicians in the Bay Area leading the participatory crowd in an evening of spirited appreciation of Irish music and dance.

The Kitchen is open during the family friendly Youth Open Mic.  Come by for a late lunch or supper and music from the Bay Area's talented under-aged artists.

For the past couple of years Kelleth Chinn has pioneered and run theYouth Open Mic at the Starry Plough, giving young musicians a rare opportunity to showcase their talent to the public.  With past performers anywhere between age 3-17 rocking their original songs, band covers, and cracking jokes, the Starry Plough Open Mic has become a gathering of some of the biggest up-and-comers in the bay area.

Now, BandWorks is teaming up with Kelleth and the Starry Plough to offer even more opportunities for Bay Area youth to strut their stuff, hone their performance skills, and just have a fun afternoon at the Starry Plough.  BandWorks hopes that our collaboration with Kelleth brings even more aspiring performers to the stage! The program will continue to run every 3rd Sunday, 4-7pm (except in March, which will be March 24th). Individuals and groups without drummers may sign up in advance by contacting the BandWorks office, or on the day of, before performances start at 4pm.

A new featured artist every week
